Bonding with the new generation

It has been quite a journey for me for the last 60 years. Starting at the age of 10, it has been a fulfilling career for me. As I continue to perform with the same zest and energy, the internet is a new platform for me to interact with my fans and audience. I am told this is a very interactive medium and am learning this new medium. Over the next couple of months, I wish to share my experience and chat with all of you.

Being the month of Navaratri, there can't be an better time to start blogging.

Dear Sri Sivaraman:

NamaskArams. My name is Venkat Ramani and I presently live in New Jersey. I first listened to you in a Ramanavami concert in Bangalore in the seventies, as a young boy, and have been a huge fan of yours ever since. Without the slightest doubt, it was your masterly playing that got me hooked permanently to Carnatic music. For many long years, and at many places in India (Bangalore / Chennai / Coimbatore to name a few) I have literally travelled hundreds of kilometers on my bicycle in those days, just for the sheer pleasure of listening to you play the mridangam. I have seen / heard you in umpteen number of carnatic concerts, lec-dems and jugalbandhis...

My career brought me to NJ in 1995 and if there is one thing that I miss VERY badly here, it is your presence in a concert. Scores of Mridangists come and go but somehow, your performances in the New Jersey / New York area have never happened. Will we have the pleasure of seeng you here on stage, and in a concert series in the US sometime? I did meet you very briefly at Cleveland when you had come in 2006 but could not listen to you play for Ravikiran. Ever since I moved to the US, I have been trying to compensate for the absence of live concerts here by listening to old recordings.

While in Bangalore, I used to be a part of SPIC-MACAY and have had the pleasure of hosting you at our home, in the late eighties / early nineties. My wife Kalyani Ramani, is a musician / carnatic music teacher here, and happens to be the niece of Trivandrum Sri R Venkataraman. The two of us have met you in Bangalore on many occasions. We both hold you in very high regard and our 11 year old son thinks of you as his role-model. He is learning the mridangam from a local teacher here and listens to / watches, your concert recordings in awe and great admiration.

I am very happy that you have started this blog, and extend a warm e-welcome to you. Although I live half-way around this globe, this I think this blog would bring me all the more close to (y)our world, and look forward to seeing this grow.

Once again, my namaskArams to you.

Warm Regards,

Venkat Ramani

New Jersey, USA

Dear Sir,

Namaskarams. I am a fan of yours and cherish and love the way you play the mridangam.

Welcome to the e-world, where in your finger will do the talking(which has been doing for 6 decades+ on the mridangam).

I have heard several of your speeches where in you have explained the role of mridangam as an accompanying instrument.

I request you to share the same for the benefit of all , particularly the days of Sri Semmangudi, Ariyakudi, Musiri etc.alongwith Sri Semmangudi's interesting jokes, anecdotes etc..

Regards
Sriram

I am very hapy to read your blog as it brings back memoriesof my college days at the Kumbakonam College in the early 50s. Your brother Panchu and me were contemporaries though we were in different roups. Your cousin Balu and myself used to commute from Papanasa every day.I was initiated to listening and appreciating Carnatic music in those days when I attended the Thyagaraja Festival in Tiruvaiyaru one year and attended concerts at the Oppliyappan temple. Nowadays I live in Mumbai and have been regularly attending concerts at the Shnmukhananda Sabha.

Namaskaram Sir. I am your fan. My son is learning Mridangam from a local teacher. One of the Nadais, he has to use both hands simultaneously like Right:Na Dhin Dhin Dhin and Left:1.5 Thom 1.5 Thom 1 Thom.
He is not able to do this correctly. He is frustrated and Teacher feels this is a wiring problem in the brain. This may be very silly question to ask a Stalwart like you. But I want to help my son progress. I hope you can help me. How would you teach in such a situation?
